Creativity is the key to a child's emotions. I know when I worked in Autistic Support as a paraprofessional, we had several children who were non-verbal, and when they would get upset, we would sit down and do creative activities so they could express themselves. One of these was having them color or using playdough to make things. It helps them work out their frustrations. I am a firm believer that when a child can't communicate how they feel or what they are experiencing, these activities help them immensely. Thanks for sharing this lovely post, Ms. Stella. It was well written. :) :)
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful reflection. I’m deeply moved by the care and intention you brought to those moments with your students.
I just love to hear these things. How something as simple as playdough or colouring can open the door to connection, healing, and understanding. When we nurture creativity, we give children a safe space to process big emotions and be seen in ways that go beyond words.
Out of my 20 year career as a paraprofessional with the School District of Philadelphia I would say that my most treasured part of my career was working with the Autism population.
They are such a loving group of children to work with.
Thank you for the love and service you’ve poured into the lives of these children.
I’m still learning more about autism and the beautiful spectrum it represents; I’ve always believed that the differences children possess are their superpowers especially when embraced early and intentionally from the perspective of meaningful connection, creativity and building lifelong skills.
Thank you so much, Peter. I couldn’t agree more. Those creative moments are like little seeds we plant, and it’s beautiful to watch them grow their own way once we give them a gentle start. 😊
I love these ideas. Self-expression is so important. The world needs to hear this message! The generations to come need to hear it. Thanks for sharing.

"Every big feeling is a story waiting to be told." Love this.
A lovely article Stella. Thank you.
Every minute we spend with our kids doing something creative, is a precious moment invested.
Sometimes, we just need to get them started on something and then let them take it forward. ..
