Navigating the Back-to-School Transition
Whether you're eagerly waiting for the new school year or feeling anxious about the changes ahead, one thing is clear: Back to School is a big deal.
For children starting school for the first time, transitioning to a new school, or just moving up a grade, there’s a mix of excitement and nerves for them—and for you too!
A new school year brings a lot of emotions: new teachers, new friends, and higher expectations.
But here’s the good news: A little preparation can make a big difference.
Why Preparation Matters
Through my research and personal experience, I've learned that children may struggle with the start of a new school year, even if they're returning to the same school.
They might be excited but also nervous, which can lead to confusion and anxiety.
It's important to remember that preparing for a new school year isn’t just about getting the right supplies—there’s so much more to consider.
For example, last year, when my daughter was preparing to move to Year 3, she was nervous despite being familiar with the school.
This experience reminded me that even small transitions can be overwhelming for children.
Whether it’s a new school or a new class, early preparation is key.
Practical Steps to Get Ready
Prepare Both Body and Mind: It’s not just about buying new uniforms and supplies; it’s also about getting your child ready mentally and emotionally for what’s ahead. If you haven’t talked about last term’s results and set goals for the new year, now’s a great time to start. Begin those conversations today!
Address Any Anxieties: Talk to your child about how they feel about the new school year. Changes like a new teacher, new classmates, or moving up a grade can be scary. Use everyday moments—like car rides or salon visits—to have these chats.
Create a Great Study Space: Make sure there’s a good study area at home. It doesn’t need to be a fancy room—just a cozy spot that feels right. Maybe set up a small home library where your child can explore books and dive into subjects they love, like Geography or History.
Plan Your Schedule: Start planning a daily routine that balances study, rest, and play. This helps children feel more in control and ready for the school year. In my book, I discuss how to effectively structure both weekdays and weekends, creating a balanced schedule that prioritizes quality time and meaningful connections.

Download Your Free Journal Now!
Download your free copy of the "All About Me" Discovery Journal and fill it out with your child.
It’s a great way to bond and help them express their unique personalities as they start the new school year.
If they’re old enough, let them fill it out themselves. For younger kids, fill it out together, to capture their essence through your eyes.
After completing the journal, print it out or share a digital copy with the school.
This way, teachers can get to know your child better from the start, building a strong rapport and addressing individual needs effectively.
Remember, this journal isn’t just for the start of a new school year—it’s great for any time your child is transitioning, whether to a new school or a new class.
Feel free to customize it to fit your child’s unique needs and perspectives.
Looking Ahead
The new school year doesn’t start on the first day back—it starts as soon as the last one ends.
Preparing ahead and incorporating learning into everyday life will help set your child up for success.
In the coming weeks, I'll share more resources to help your child smoothly transition into the new academic year and thrive.
Let’s make this school year the best one yet by helping our children start strong and stay confident!
I can’t wait to see how you and your children use the "All About Me" Discovery Journals.
If there are other resources, you’d like to see for transitioning back to school with a focus on learning and development, I’d love to hear your suggestions!
